Responsible for knowing and understanding the principles behind welding of API 5L pipeline material manufactured by high frequency welding (HFW) and Double Submerged Arc Welding (DSAW).  Analyzes and designs manufacturing welding processes in the HFW and DSAW facilities.



  • Working to ensure the safety of all employees
  • Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) design
  • Welding Procedure Qualification (PQR) creation and review for conformance to required standard
  • Process control analysis of welding parameters
  • Administering welder qualification tests
  • Maintaining welder personnel and equipment qualification records
  • Defect analysis; including root cause and reporting
  • Welder parameter tracking and analysis
  • Consumable design in conjunction with suppliers
  • Welding equipment set-up and design
  • Mechanical property analysis
  • Writing procedures and working with Operations personnel to ensure best practices



  • Bachelor's Degree in Welding Engineering or Metallurgical/Materials Engineering with emphasis on welding.
  • 3 5 years' experience in steel welding with HFW, SAW, SMAW, and GMAW processes; pipeline welding experience preferred




  • Knowledge of and/or certifications in NDT methods utilized (UT, RT, PT, MT).
  • Knowledge of mechanical testing (spectrometer, hardness, tensile, charpy impact).
  • Knowledge of API 5L, API Q1 and ISO quality systems; chemistry; measurement & testing; ultrasonic principles & personnel certification, visual inspection techniques, pressure testing requirements and material behavior; destructive testing requirements; analysis; equipment calibration
  • Knowledge of relevant standards (ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1, API 5L, API 1104, etc.)
  • Analytical skills for pre and post evaluation of problems, processes, and specifications; ability to see trends and identify causes of unacceptable product
  • Mathematical and statistical skills needed for evaluation of data
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills required
