Manager of Automation

Provides expert direction and oversight in optimization and maintenance of automation and control systems. Responsible for managing automation and control systems design, specification, programming, simulation and testing, and start-up assistance. Manages and directs all Automation Engineers, Automation Specialists, and Automation Technologists. Provides training and collaboration to Maintenance employees.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Acquire a detailed understanding of all of the different automation systems (distributed control systems, programmable logic controllers, SCADA systems)
  • Implement code changes on the automation systems under change control.
  • Investigate and provide technical advice and support to manufacturing and other engineering disciplines on automation related issues.
  • Operate according to SOPs developed for site engineering and maintenance.
  • Partner with different disciplines to deliver automation projects in accordance with GAMP guidelines.
  • Generate documentation and SOPs associated with each of the Automation systems as required.
  • Manage the specification, development, installation and validation of automation projects within budget and corporate guidelines.
  • Support operations with technical queries.
  • Performs additional related duties as requested.
  • Understanding and proficiency in machine safety and guarding including ANSI B11 (and B11-19), as well as EN ISO 13849-1 machine safety standards and their application.
  • Provides expert advice to senior management on projects, control systems and processes

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent. Minimum of 10 years experience in industry, preferably in a metals industry or relevant manufacturing environment, with particular emphasis in electrical, electronic and automation discipline.  Has previous experience with supervising engineering or automation technologists.

 

 QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Extensive experience with Siemens S7 PLCs, utilizing Step 7 PLC software tools, Siemens HMI using WINCC software with experience in machine control required
  • Strong working knowledge of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) in operating environment
  • Strong working knowledge of panel design and layout, bill of materials, and wiring schematic capabilities
  • Experience reading and red-lining PI&D drawings
  • Good knowledge of industrial electronics such as AC Inverters, DC Converters, etc.
  • Proven track record in engineering leadership
  • Ability to develop and implement standard engineering practices, as well as provide detailed documentation upon project completion
  • Strong proven analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong working knowledge of spiral welded pipe technology
  • Strong working knowledge of principles of continuous improvement
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills; teamwork
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Strong project management skills
  • Demonstrated initiative
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001 and API 5L
  • Knowledgeable in electrical power distribution including medium voltage, and NFPA 70E standards

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to move about facility and spend time in mill environment.

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Circumstances may require meetings throughout the facility, including the mill and offsite. Some travel may be required. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
